The UCSF Myositis Clinic specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory myopathies, a group of autoimmune diseases in which muscle tissue becomes inflamed and breaks down. We care for patients with a range of these conditions, including dermatomyositis, polymyositis, inclusion body myositis and necrotizing autoimmune myopathy.

Our clinic is a one-stop shop where patients with myositis can receive comprehensive evaluations, diagnosis and treatment. To ensure diagnostic accuracy, we synthesize findings from physical exams, lab tests, muscle biopsies and electrodiagnostic tests. Our care team is led by a neurologist with extensive experience in treating neuromuscular disorders. To tailor a plan to each patient's specific needs, we collaborate closely with other UCSF specialists, including rheumatologists, nutritionists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and respiratory therapists.

Patients have access to the full scope of treatments, including drugs that modify immune system activity, respiratory therapy to ease breathing difficulties, physical therapy to improve muscle strength and flexibility, and occupational therapy to assist with performing daily activities. Our nutritionists provide dietary guidance to support overall muscle health.

We also conduct clinical trials to evaluate new treatments for inflammatory myopathies. Our patients may have opportunities to participate in clinical trials and may benefit from early access to innovative therapies.

To visit our clinic, you'll need a referral from your doctor. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please give us a call.
